Branch National Rally
Jul 19 @ 14:00 – Jul 21 @ 16:00

It is with great pleasure that I can announce the 2019 National Rally will be held in Wales.

The facilities at the club are excellent. The main building is split into an upstairs concert room and a downstairs bar with conservatory. The club has a kitchen and will be cooking breakfast, lunch and evening meal. There is also a local Indian restaurant close by that will give a discount to the Riders.
There will be 24hr access to showers and toilets, also a tea/coffee room that will also have 24hr access.

There is sufficient secure hard standing for parking of the motorcycles (camping is on the practice pitch and therefore motorcycles will not be allowed by the tents. We also have an area for those who use a campervan/motorhome. Ticket Price £20 in advance, £25 on the gate as normal, there will be musical entertainment on the Friday and Saturday Night, A Ride-out for Saturday :ride: (we have a number of routes, which one will be decided by the weather, as you all know the sun always shines in Wales)

Phil T will be organising rideouts on some great riding roads and for the race fans amongst you the (in)famous Aberdare Park Race meeting is the same weekend, about 20min ride north from the rally site. http://www.aberdare-park-road-races.co.uk. The local racers call it AberSCARE.

Fancy Dress Theme – As the Rally is being held at a rugby club, it has been decided to have a ‘SPORTS’ theme. Use your imagination, there’s more to sport than Moto GP and football.

The Story

“Jess and I had an interesting time on Friday morning at Oxford Town Hall, looking at the room in the cellar which for many years was used as a poppy appeal store. It is full of stuff, some of which is at least 10 years old but at that is at the front, there will be older things at the back.

Jess is arranging for a van to come from Aylesford to collect it all, which will come with a couple of sturdy helpers, but we will need a few more people to form a human chain to get it all out and safely on its way. I don’t think much if any of what is there is heavy (stacks of collecting trays and quite a few probably empty collecting tins mostly) and someone will need to shake all the tins as there may still be money in some of them, so it isn’t a task that needs muscle as much as a willingness to get stuck in for just an hour or two to clear it all. Jess can organise some lunch/refreshments for those involved as a bit of a very small, meagre, RBL reward.

so, I wondered if the Area Team might like to pitch in? There’s nothing like a bit of fun, purposeful shared activity for team building …

Best wishes

Lynda

Lynda Atkins”

The Requirement

A few bodies to help out in creating a chain to move the stuff out of Oxford Town Hall ready to go back to Aylesford for recycling.

Riders Branch Birthday
Nov 27 all-day

The Anniversary of:-

Royal British Legion RIDERS Branch Inaugural Meeting At Cheltenham Branch, St. Anne’s Road Cheltenham, Glos. on 27th November 2004

In July 2004 a meeting took place at The Royal British Legion Village to discuss the possibility of an ex-services motorcycle club becoming an official branch of the RBL.

Circumstances took over and this idea was discarded but not forgotten. In late August, Paul Pollard and Graham Barber decided to resurrect the idea and approached some of those who were at the first meeting. The Legion was contacted again with a clear way ahead and an informal meeting was set up in November at RBL Cheltenham where the 14 original members met to discuss how to proceed and to form a committee, 12 volunteered for the first Riders Committee. It was at this meeting that we formally decided on our name and an adapted set of Branch Byelaws. At the end of this informal meeting, the official inaugural meeting took place and ‘The Riders’ were officially formed.

Note

As you are no doubt all aware, there is currently no County Representative for Oxon between you and the Committee.

I have moved on within the branch to take on the role of South Central Regional Representative and am unable to commit the time to both roles.

Therefore it is time a link was sought between you, the members, and the Branch committee. With access to the County E-mail, Branch Calendar and County membership lists to assist in the role.

The role is mostly about communication between:-

    • the members and the committee.
    • Third parties and the members.
    • Oxon County RBL and the members / Committee.

Primary requirements are

    • An ability to get on with people.
    • An ability to solve issues / know who to request assistance from
    • Technically able to utilise a computer with reasonable proficiency.

The County Rep is not expected to organise everything for the members he / she is there to facilitate the running of events by ensuring the paperwork is completed by the organiser and passed to the relevant authorities.

More information about the responsibilities of the County rep can be located in the Branch Byelaws (We have some? you may ask)

COVID-19 – update on the Annual Conference – sent on behalf of the National Chairman

Dear Member,

Further to my recent email about the Legion’s response and planning around the Covid-19 pandemic, I wanted to provide you an update on our Annual Conference.

I am sorry to say that we have had to make the decision to cancel this year’s Annual Conference in its current form. We will be exploring other options and next steps and will keep you informed of our plans around this. We have been considering this as the Covid-19 situation has been unfolding, balancing the desire to mitigate any cost of cancellation with a timely decision.

The Government has been very clear in their advice on self-isolating and social distancing, and as per my recent email to you, we are strongly encouraging all our members to follow the advice given.

I know many of you will be disappointed by this, as am I, but we really feel it is in the best interests of our members, volunteers and employees’ health and wellbeing.

With regards to the VE Day commemorations, we will let you know when we have more information from the Government and what they are planning to do given the pandemic.

We will continue our discussions and planning for how we can support our local communities through our operations and members.  We will of course continue to keep you updated as we work through this challenging time.

Please do your best to share this information with all of your members, to help keep everyone up to date.

Best wishes,

Una Cleminson

Chairman, Board of Trustees

Oxon – “The Road to Peace is Paved with Headstones”
May 30 @ 18:30 – 21:00

“The Road to Peace is Paved with Headstones”
THE COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION

ITS HISTORY AND LEGACY

As we commemorate the many anniversaries of The Great War and The Second World War there has been much focus on remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This talk highlights the role played by those far sighted men and women who established an organisation, now known as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, so that remembrance of their sacrifice will endure in perpetuity. We will look at the architectural and physical characteristics of the cemeteries and memorials as well as the underlying principles that govern their design.

In addition, we will have a brief introduction to the Commission’s presence in Oxfordshire and the surrounding area.

Dick in the last 5 years has become a ‘Champion’ and Volunteer with The Commission and delivers talks to local community groups; history associations and schools and escorts tours to the local CWGC cemetery at Botley in Oxford. Dick is delighted to spread the story of this extraordinary organisation

Deddington Branch will be hosting an Open Evening on Saturday 30 May in their Parish Church at which Mr Dick Richards of the the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will present the history of the Commission and their work maintaining some 1.4 million CWGC graves in 23,000 locations worldwide.

On the North wall, as an appropriate backdrop to his talk, will be our nine WWI battlefield grave markers – believed to be the largest group of such crosses in the UK.
Oxfordshire & Northamptonshire RBL members, families and friends are very welcome to attend. There will be no entrance fee. A cash bar for beer, wine, soft drinks, tea, coffee and light snacks will be available from 6.30pm. The presentation will start at 7.30pm and last approximately an hour (inc questions) Anyone travelling a distance looking for a meal might like to know there are several restaurants & pubs in the village.  See:  https://www.deddington.org.uk/directory/pubs-restaurants-takeaways/

RTTW 2020

It is with a great deal of sadness that I have to announce that Ride to the Wall, in its current format, will not be taking place this year.

Over the past few weeks we have been seeking advice from many different sources and ultimately, at this time, we have had to be guided by Government guidelines and other stakeholders involved in the event.  At the moment, there is no sign of any easing of restrictions and to make the decision now allows people the opportunity to change any arrangements they may have in place.

The decision was not taken lightly and after 12 successful years, having the elements thrown at us on numerous occasions, and at the same time running a smooth event year on year, this year, our 13th we have been beaten by an alien force, something of which we have never experienced before.

As well as our remembrance service you raise a massive amount towards the upkeep of the NMA.  Nothing more so than last year when we once again presented a record amount.

Merchandise will still be open and we will be presenting a cheque on AFD next year for the amount raised this year. A large part of our revenue is taken on the day, which will unfortunately not be able to happen this year, but I’m sure we will be able to present the NMA with a significant amount.

If anybody wishes to be refunded their voluntary contribution and return their year bar, please contact us before 3rd October through the website. Unfortunately, registrations cannot be carried over to next year.

My priority as Founder of Ride to the Wall  is your safety first and foremost as WALLERS, and also not putting you or the general public at unnecessary risk

I am hopeful that through your support we will come back stronger next year and 2021 will once again be a massive year in the history of RTTW.

Best wishes from Martin Dickinson – Founder of Ride to the Wall.

NMA Statement

The last few months have been truly unsettling for us all and, whilst some normality is slowly beginning to return, we still find ourselves in unprecedented times which makes planning for large scale events extremely difficult.  Even with the best social distancing practices and procedures, extra cleaning regimes and reduced numbers, we have concluded, much to our disappointment, that Ride to the Wall cannot take place in a physical form in 2020.

This decision has been made jointly between the Ride to the Wall Committee and the Arboretum management following weeks of discussions, scenario planning and changes in Government legislation.  The final decision has been made with Wallers’ safety and reputation at its core, along with consideration for the wellbeing of our neighbours and local community.  Whilst we understand there will be much sadness within the Ride to the Wall community, we ask you for your support with this difficult decision.

Whilst we cannot congregate at the Arboretum this year, we will be holding a virtual event and we ask as many of you as possible to join us.  We will still raise the much-needed funds for the Arboretum and we promise you entertainment, camaraderie and reflection via our digital channels. Further details will be made available in September, but please do keep the date of 3rd October in your diary.

Thank you for your support and patience over the last few months and for your understanding with this decision.
