Royal British Legion RIDERS Branch Inaugural Meeting At Cheltenham Branch, St. Anne’s Road Cheltenham, Glos. on 27th November 2004

In July 2004 a meeting took place at The Royal British Legion Village to discuss the possibility of an ex-services motorcycle club becoming an official branch of the RBL.

Circumstances took over and this idea was discarded but not forgotten. In late August, Paul Pollard and Graham Barber decided to resurrect the idea and approached some of those who were at the first meeting. The Legion was contacted again with a clear way ahead and an informal meeting was set up in November at RBL Cheltenham where the 14 original members met to discuss how to proceed and to form a committee, 12 volunteered for the first Riders Committee. It was at this meeting that we formally decided on our name and an adapted set of Branch Byelaws. At the end of this informal meeting, the official inaugural meeting took place and ‘The Riders’ were officially formed.

RBLR 1000 RIDE
Jun 16 – Jun 17 all-day

The date for the 2018 event is now confirmed as the weekend of 15 – 17 June :D

Everything will be available from the web page this time, including sat nav files and other documents.

There will be SEVEN routes on offer  :

North & South 1000’s (same routes and directions as the last two years)
500 mile clockwise and anti-clockwise (previously only anti-clockwise offered)
Bunburner Gold (1500 miles in 24 hours – for IBA veterans only)

As always many hands make light work and as there’s no clash with Armed Forces Day next year we’re hoping that if we can get 20 – 30 volunteers nobody will have to work more than a few hours each. There’ll be a link on the website for potential volunteers to get details and contact me to register their support :D

Dorset – Weymouth and Portland Veterans Parade
Jun 24 all-day

As you are all aware the Borough again will welcome veterans, residents and visitors to a weekend (23 – 25 Jun 18) of military and veterans commemorations and celebrations. The Armed Forces and our Veterans have made and continue to make a major contribution to our Nation and the Weymouth event will honour, celebrate and provide a focus on the tireless work carried out by all Veterans Associations, individuals and today’s Military Force.

Sat 23 Jun 18 will see the Military Vehicles arrive, awareness stands on the Esplanade and live music from the 1940’s.

The annual Service and Parade on Weymouth Seafront will take place Sun 24th June and the Armed Forces Flag Raising on Mon 25th June 18.

Details are below for those that wish to participate in the veterans parade.

Meet up point:
Lodmoor Carpark (At the rear marked off like previous years)
Weymouth
DT4 7SX

Meet up time:
1000hrs – 1030hrs

At 1100hrs we intend to hold a small service (Awaiting confirmation of a Biker Bishop).

There will be no move before 1130hrs. Once the procession moves off we will follow in a orderly fashion at the rear and then halt at the memorial. Hopefully if we manage to source a Bishop he will say a few words and we will then lay a RBLR Wreath. We will then safely catch back up to the procession and carry on being welcomed by the general public that will be lining the sea front. We are hoping to park up at the ferry port just like last year (Awaiting confirmation from the council).

There will be trade stalls and our Community Fundraiser with have a British Legion stall on display with also live music from the Decadettes https://www.facebook.com/thedecadettes.

If the weather is like last year can i suggest that you bring plenty of fluids as it was a scorcher.

Good time to put names to faces and to look ahead to what we, as a county, want to do for the coming year.
